Health Testing
3 Year Health Guarantee
Our philosophy is health first. Only animals that have been fully screened for genetic defects enter into our breeding program. Unlike some breeds, Maine Coons are not known for having many health problems, but there are a few diseases that MC’s can be susceptible to. We strive to breed healthy cats and weed out any congenital defects, but every cat, just like humans, is an individual and all the testing in the world can not guarantee that they will never face any health issues. If we identify any health problems from a particular line, they will be removed from the breeding program. We provide the following health testing on all adult cats and they are screened for the following:
HCM: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic disease that causes the heart muscle to thicken and stiffen, making it harder for the heart to pump blood.
Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip joint has not developed properly and the socket is too shallow. This allows the ball to slip partially or completely out of the joint. Hip dysplasia ranges from a mild abnormality to a complete dislocation of the hip.
PK- Pyruvate kinase deficiency: A feline with this red blood cell abnormality will be mild to severely anemic.
SMA - Spinal muscular atrophy: This disorder causes an ongoing loss of nerve cells in the spinal cord, leading to a reduction in muscle mass over time.
PKD - Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited disorder in which small, closed, liquid-filled sacs develop in the tissue of the feline kidney. This disease can be potentially fatal .
FIV - Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system. FIV leads to increased susceptibility to infections and other diseases.
FELV - Feline leukemia virus weakens the cat's immune system which can lead to diseases which can be lethal.
